Brayko and Novoseltseva Take The Moscow Cup
Five men and five women participated in the 8th Moscow Cup High Jump
tournament, alternating attempts - unlike last year, when athletes traded
turns after each height - in the sector to the background of their favorite
tunes.
Petr Brayko of St. Petersburg won the men’s competition. He was the only
one to soar over 2,27, doing so in his final try. Vyacheslav Voronin
cleared 2,18 in style, but small technical errors prevented him from
conquering 2,21. Sergey Klyugin experimented quite a lot, apparently
keeping the upcoming World Championships in mind. Failing in his first go
at 2,21, he moved his remaining two attempts to 2,27, but was not
successful.
The biggest surprise of the women’s competition came from the youngest
competitor – 19-year-old Tatyana Novoseltseva of Bryansk. Stumbling once at
1,86, she then cleared 1,89, 1,92 and 1,95, all on her first attempts,
setting a new personal record at the latter height.
Marina Kuptsova, who, unfortunately, never seemed to find her true winning
form this season, dropped out at 1,95.
